16th (out of 489) in DPReview.com "Found Framed" Challenge

Strange though, as I entered this picture together with another one which, in my eyes, looked more interesting and artistically more creative. But the eye of my Buddah ranked a disappointing 140th.

Photographing is not a neutral, inconsequential act

I am really no big fan of selective colouring but would resolve to it if it helps illustrate an experience I wish to share. I was visiting the Colonias Municipales San Francisco Javier y Ntra. Señora de Los Ángeles (Madrid), an urban renovation project meant to replace old (1949) apartment buildings in a popular Madrid neighborhood with a new, more functional, energy-saving social housing scheme. While taking pictures illustrating the architectonic/social changes taking place, I noticed a couple of small, traditional one-storey houses that seemed to resist the great ideas of contemporary town planners. As I was taking pictures, a man came to me and asked "¿Qué pasa con la casa?, obviously fearing some newly unsollicited development, possibly affecting the very survival of these two dwellings. I told him I was just taking picture for my own use, trying to reassure him. He went straight back to an old lady traditionally dressed in black (we are in Spain) and told her to rest assured. Tells you how on the edge people can be when it comes to dealing with change. I really felt sorry for having prompted such fears. Taking photos is not a neutral, inconsequential gesture. But that we all know, don't we?

Il y a 60 ans, la question royale...

Cette affiche ornant les murs du Café du Centre à Delft (Pays-Bas) fait référence à un épisode dramatique de l'histoire de Belgique au XXème siècle : la question royale et le sort de S.M. le Roi Léopold III. Exceptionnellement - car il déroge aux dispositions contstitutionnelles-, un référendum est organisé sur l'opportunité du retour de Léopold III. La question divise le pays, entre partisans et opposants au retour. En dépit d'une majorité exprimée au niveau national pour son retour sur le trône, Leopold III abdique en faveur de son fils , Baudouin Ier : les résultats diffèrent en effet fortement entre le Nord (favorable au retour) et le Sud (opposé) du pays. Découverte il y a 10 jours - in tempore non suspecto - cette affiche publiée par les partisans d'une abdication nous offre un clin d'oeil "en miroir" sur une question qui semble à nouveau agiter la classe politique belge (encore que dans des termes et avec des enjeux différents).
